I’m on the east coast, but as someone who’s driven across several states to go to the Oppo Rally two years in a row now, I highly recommend it. You don’t need a fast car or a fancy car or an old car. Just show up in anything and be ready to have fun.

I would try my absolute best to come. I would have to either drive or fly down from Vancouver.
If I flew down, I’d try and snag something on Turo

I’ve got a spare room I keep open for psychopaths I meet online . So you’re welcome to stay.

That’d be cool! I’ll bring my cooler for kidneys cold drinks.
(I’ve met 22 people from here/Jalopnik over the past year and have yet to be kidnapped or murdered)
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:28 |

Says you, can they vouch none of their Kidneys were taken?
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:28 |

If you don’t go to Zzyzx why even bother
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:30 |

And I have a healthy supply of kidneys in my freezer.

To be honest, Ram_Riot_6's last post or discussion was just before we met up...

The reason to not go there is that it’s like a 2.75 hour trip out there from Los Angeles . One way. Multiply by 2. Would need to be worth a lot of points and have some seriously cool stuff to visit (nothing worth visiting out on Zzyzx Road last time I checked).

If you lived in Good California it would be a shorter drive
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:43 |

I drove past there on the way to Vegas once. I just saw the sign and was intruged. Have been curious about it ever since! No idea what is there though lol.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:44 |

There is no town called “Good” in California.
Sorry, this was from Los Angeles, which is where people tend to live in SoCal.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:46 |

Looking forward to it! Glad someone took the initiative so that I didnt have to do it. Happy to help with some planning though and will gladly be your guinea pig of test driving some routes over and over again.

Maybe you should find a less risky hobby.

If I still lived there I’d be going, would prefer central
coast or central
valley just to get away from the large population centers. A weekend driving around LA or SF would be interesting but also frustrating. I don’t think most folks realize how f-ing huge CA really is.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:55 |

When I read "rally" I think dirt roads. But I'm guessing we're talking more of a trip on regular roads?
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:59 |

I would love to join if I’m around. I am always jealous of the east coast rally. I am not a planner but can possibly help if you need it

I just expect a nice Italian to prance around CA
![]() 07/31/2018 at 16:59 |

Yes road rally
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:00 |
|
Yeah so far it is looking like a SoCal based rally
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:01 |
|
I have a basic route I am looking at to force people on with big points to make it fun. Or another idea if we keep it closer to h ome
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:08 |
|
SoCal would suit me, it’s super cheap to fly from Bellingham to Palm Springs and I (sorta) know my way around the area.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:21 |
|
Where are you thinking about going with it? One idea I really would love to see would be to do a checkpoint pairing where you need to go to the beach and then go see some snow in the same day. Obviously it would need to be in the Springtime then but that is a uniquely California thing that people tend to forget about.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:21 |

Perfect. I just ordered a few little things before we drive up the coast. I don’t have a free weekend between now and then so hopefully I can work on it during the week!
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:24 |

Let me know next time there’s a Midwest rally. The Rabbit wouldn’t be fun for a drive that long, and the BMW Burt ever one else weird car cred lol
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:27 |
|
porque no los dos? There are probably some sweet dirt roads that go into the middle of nowhere. They always seem to find really fun dirt roads on roadkill somehow. I was always curious where the hell they drive to.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:27 |
|
Ah well in that case I'm definitely in. I imagine it will be exactly like what I've seen on Top Gear.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:30 |

There are so many cars on Turo in LA, it is awesome. I really want to form a team and group buy a sub $1000 crapcan on craigslist and rally that, but that takes a special kind of idiot to agree to that.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:36 |

Lol god I hope so
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:37 |

Well I am sure there will be some higher points of interest off the beaten path for the courageous
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:37 |

Well I don’t do that one, so idk about that
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:38 |

Well I am sure I’ll need some planning time. I’ve contacted Dusty on how to better organize the event and I need to read about his rally more
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:41 |
|
Oh, I figure it will be decently far off with
how much planning is involved. I’m just worried about our impending
PCH trip
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:42 |

One neat thing about the east coast Oppo Rally is that there were so many choices. Picking your optimal route is part of the fun. If we had all been on the same route that would have taken a lot of the fun out of it. Dusty set it up so that everyone could pretty much hit a different set of checkpoints and still have a chance to win.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 17:55 |

It’s one of the homes of sand racing
![]() 07/31/2018 at 18:02 |

Not all of us have two cars and can take one of them off road.
That would be funny to see you rally your Miata.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 18:21 |
|
Check Burbank. I could easily get you from there, or depending on the time of day you can take Metrolink or Amtrak north.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 18:21 |
|
The only place I’ve stuck a 4wd in snow? San Bernardino mountains!
![]() 07/31/2018 at 18:22 |
|
Your area would be nicer, honestly. It’s quieter, and much prettier than the LA area.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 19:25 |
|
Oh closer to home I meant LA... but I would definatley take us out of LA.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 19:25 |
|
Yeah that is a good idea
![]() 07/31/2018 at 19:25 |
|
Yeah, but who knows when that will be...
![]() 07/31/2018 at 19:49 |
|
Hopefully after I send my sacrifices to the Italian car Gods lol
I’m getting a pesky CEL on startup. It never comes on while driving, and the code it is throwing shouldn’t even register until the car is up to temperature. SO, after much reading, I’m changing the coolant temp sensors. A whopping $15 each off amazon. I do have to drain the coolant though -_-
The car is running great, other than that (*knocks on wood*)
![]() 07/31/2018 at 19:54 |
|
I think it depends on what you’re looking to get out of it. If you want to set up an Oppo car cruise with some neat pit stops, that’s cool. But if you’re trying to replicate the east coast rally, you want a start, an end, and everything in between is basically a choose your own adventure novel. Everyone scatters, but they gradually all converge on a finish line. You can certainly encourage particular routes by your placement of checkpoints, but if everyone takes the same route they’ll all hit the same checkpoints and have the same score.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 20:23 |

That is a fair point. Thank you
![]() 07/31/2018 at 20:25 |

I wish my bike would run. Then I could sell it, fix up the GTO, sell that, and buy a Cayman S. I love the GTO, but I am getting bored or tired of it. IDK, I just... lust after other things a lot and the Cayman S is calling my name hard.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 20:40 |
|
I’m on the other side of the country but you should still do it.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 20:45 |

That would be the vehicle of choice, it has no paint. The ground clearance is a bit of an issue but as long as there are no rocks it is good to go.
![]() 07/31/2018 at 20:49 |
|
I’m sure if you email Dusty he can give you some advice.
In this year's rally, the start and finish points were only just over 100 miles apart if you took the toll road (which was against the rules, and you wouldn't hit any checkpoints anyway). We left the starting line at 9am, and teams could check in at the finish line between 7-10pm. So people had 10-13 hours, and most of us drove hundreds of miles. So that's where I'd start. Pick a start and an end that are maybe 100-150 miles apart tops, and figure out 75 or so checkpoints between those two.

stuck in the snow in cali. SAD!
![]() 08/01/2018 at 00:15 |

Haha that would be fun! Different types of fun cars! Lots of nice roads for a Cayman by you
![]() 08/01/2018 at 00:50 |
|
If I flew down I'd 100% be down for that. I've been in the preliminary stages of planning a trip like Akio's where I fly out, buy somethibg cool and cheap and drive a pre-planned route to some cool places I've never been
![]() 08/01/2018 at 00:51 |

Too much work and I hate fun. I did a checkpoint rally around SoCal years ago, we looped all the way out into Anza Borrego, up Mt. Palomar, and beyond , on the road all day and failed to hit almost all the points. It was a lot of fun.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 00:54 |
|
Oh no. If there is actual stage rally style bonus point sections I might just have to skip out on work and drive the Miata south.....
![]() 08/01/2018 at 01:16 |
|
Definitely dooo that! And if that doesnt work out, my Miata can substitute as a rally support vehicle for codriving. You’re the best candidate for creating a miata oppo team lol.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 01:21 |
|
I drove a regular cayman and immediately wished I could have that instead of my Miata. So I definitely enjoyed it. I can imagine that a Cayman S would only be better. Someday when I can have three cars that will be my first choice.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 01:43 |
|
“miata Oppo team”
Be still my beating heart.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 10:00 |

It was originally some cult compound if I recall correctly. Currently the only thing on the road is a UC outpost for desert studies (I believe it’s where the compound was).
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:23 |
|
Yeah very fun
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:23 |
|
That is a big endorsement .
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:24 |
|
OK guess I need to add a rally stage
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:24 |
|
If you have the 911 in time then I will force you to go, if you don’t I know who has a Miata you could use
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:26 |
|
Yeah I emailed Dusty, nothing yet
Th anks for the info on the Mass Rally, that is kind of what I have been looking at doing. made the most sense for this style rally.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:26 |

Just curious, do you have a date range in mind? I know socal is pretty nice year round, so not sure if you’re aiming for summer, fall or even winter months.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:29 |
|
I think fall. Maybe late September and early October when the weather is just touching on getting cooler from the Indian Summer
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:34 |
|
What year was the Cayman? I drove an early one, (2006, I think) and didn’t really care for it. It was fun and capable, but lacked a bit of character. I was honestly happy leaving in my Miata (my 1st one, an NB1). The Cayman GT4 on the other-hand...
Maybe I should go drive a newer one
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:36 |
|
Oh, PS, I responded SoCal only but would be up for something like Santa Barbara too.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:43 |
|
Lol Santa Barbara is definitely still Socal
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:49 |
|
It was a 2010. I definitely just enjoyed the quality and smoothness of it but also thought that it still had the same tight steering and responsiveness like the Miata. While yeah it didnt have the top down portion, it just felt more solid being a hard roofed car anyways. I definitely would need to try a Cayman S to really solidify my thoughts but overall I just enjoyed the Porsche experience. The price though is enough to keep me in a Miata.

805 area code, so I’m calling it central coast hahaha
But really, it’s like south central CA. Not to be confused with south central LA
![]() 08/01/2018 at 12:57 |

I think this was completely base too. I should look into them a little more. Everyone seems to love them so I’m probably missing something haha
![]() 08/01/2018 at 14:01 |

You have to wonder what sort of mechanical condition it might have been in too. In the case of the s2k I drove, it was janky as hell and kind of put a damper on my opinion of the car. Like it was difficult to shift the car and that car specifically known for such an amazing gearbox. So YMMV when it comes to rental versions of these cars.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 14:09 |
|
This is very true. My sample size is small haha
I’m playing rental car roulette again this weekend. Hopefully my good luck will continue because I really want to hit the 33 again and explore some other fun roads.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 14:44 |
|
You want some company for the drive? I havent been to the 33 in a while. My girlfriend is out of town seeing a Beyonce concert so I am left with endless planning freedom lol.
What car are you trying to rent?
![]() 08/01/2018 at 14:51 |
|
I’m down! But be warned, I plan on leaving early. Going through National again but this time it was cheaper to rent from the ‘sporty’ category so I went with it. Hopefully I can at least snag a Camaro. Last time I got a ND RF so hopefully I didn’t use all my luck haha
I’ll dig up your number and text you the details
![]() 08/01/2018 at 15:02 |
|
If you were not leaving early, I would be annoyed haha . And since I am on the way, I will just meet you in Malibu rather than trek down to LAX. I am hoping to swap out my header before then so I need to get a good test drive in to determine if I hate a stock header or really can’t tell the difference. I am really surprised they have RF Miatas, that is awesome. The newer Camaros are actually A TON of fun. The last time I ran 33 was in a rental Camaro vert. It is soooooo damn heavy but it sounds really nice and actually turns.
![]() 08/01/2018 at 15:29 |
|
Ok awesome! It should save you from a bit of heat-stroke leaving early as well. It gets hot up there haha
![]() 08/01/2018 at 15:33 |
|
I was stoked they had the Miata! But I just looked and it seems like they made a new category for ‘compact sports car’. Hopefully most of their locations will have them soon!
![]() 10/07/2018 at 17:35 |

Any update on this? Wrong Wheel Drive mentioned you were working on this.
I hope it happens and I hope I can sell my wife on making it a cheap little getaway with me.

Not lately, been super busy with work and my car being broken . I do have POIs mapped out and such and I just need to do a bit more work on it. I will try to do more this week.

Yeah like $3k later. I could have bought 2 Miatas XD
